I'm planning on getting The Orange Box editon of Half-Life 2, and I want to have some history of the game before I play it. I've read a little bit about it, seems like the usual scientists screw up and aliens come attacking.

Half Life spoilers...Obviously
During a testing of a item something goes wrong causing a tear between our and this mysterious other dimension. You play Gordon (the guy that loaded the anomalous item into the machine) and because you're wearing a Bio-hazard suit you're sent to get help and fight your way through all these creatures that have appeared. as you approach the surface the military arrive, sadly their orders involve wiping out any witnesses. The remaining scientists in the Lambda section (the other side of the black mesa complex from you) have come up with a plan to take control of the suituation. You then have to fight your way over the surface and through old rail lines to get to the Lambda section. Once you reach it you learn that they have been experimenting in teleportation, however to teleport from one point to another in our world you have to travel through theirs. Lambda's plan is to send you through to the other world and kill the mother of all aliens in the hopes of ceasing the attack, naturally you succeed.
Now at the start of the game you see a guy in a black suit pretty much everywhere and it's pretty clear he's not good news, one would theorise that he had something to do with the "accident". After you complete the game he appears and says thanks to you (Gordon) they have taken control of the outerworld because of you and ofters you A) a job or B) a fight you can't win. The official ending is that you take the job.
Might also interest you to know that Lambda is a greek letter, we just happen to use that letter as the symbol for half-life, which i assume you know about.

Well thanks Jallen. So that guy, think I've heard him referred to as G-man maybe. He's part of another alien race? Yeah, I knew about the Lambda symbol being used for half-life.

Well as far as i know it was part of some sort of secret organisation, i haven't played the second game so don't know much about him, hopefully when i do i'll learn more about him and his motives, then again, might not.

Oh, I see what you're saying. I guess this organization had known about this other dimension. I'm looking forward to it, especially that gun that can pick up stuff and then hurl it back at people.

yeah the gravity in the second game is meant to be great, i remember them banging on about how every item reacted as it would in real life, say if you shot a crate the crate would move.
Half Life was such a great game i hold high hopes for the sequel
